about
In October 1998 Abraham, a young, single professional from South India, attended a national missions conference. There he answered a call from the Lord to go into northern areas of India, which were largely unreached. He left a good job the next year, and began training new baby Christians in a Bible College in northern India.
In early 2001, he met Vince and Beth Pomeroy, who were on a short-term mission trip in India. They were so impressed by his passion for the lost that the relationship continued after the mission trip. They are his organization in America, through New Light International. They have returned several times to the field and are familiar with the work of Abraham's ministries, New Life and Light Mission and the
Nava Kanthi Society, a social work organization, although they have grown so fast it is hard work keeping up with the growth of the churches and other good works.
ministry
New Life and Light Mission is named for John 1:4: “In him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men.” It exists to spread the good news of salvation to hitherto unreached people. Training pastors, sending them forth into fields (often their own home towns), helping them plant churches. A pattern of holy living is modeled and taught in the Bible Colleges which is implemented in the churches as they take root.
Nava Kanthi gives a hand up to needy people in the areas where they can reach. Education is sorely needed for the disadvantaged to escape severe poverty and is a main focus in the work of Nava Kanthi.
The work accomplished by these two ministries includes:
- Ministry and outreach: Evangelism, Bible studies, and more, are conducted in 290 places in four states, with 78 working Evangelists/pastors/staff and 68 Churches holding Sunday worship, bible study and Friday Prayer with Fasting. Outreach of churches includes many after-school youth programs run free of charge.
- Bible Colleges: Three residential Bible Colleges use six visiting faculty and the ISOM Video curriculum
- Film ministry: Three teams conducted ministry in two states, visiting many villages with Jesus Film and other evangelistic films.
- Schools for children: In places where no school was operating, Nava Kanthi runs two children’s schools in Bihar state.
- Literacy Programs: In India, 25% of the children are outside of the school system. Their families are forced by poverty to send them to work to help support the family. There’s a great need for literacy among adults and children in the villages. NLLM has trained workers teaching literacy in 25 centers in two states.
- Children’s Homes: Roshini Children’s Homes operate in two states, taking in needy children, providing healthy living, schooling, and value training. At present, 57 children reside in four homes. They are supported by sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a child, please contact the Pomeroy’s.
- Six Sewing Centers: 6 centers about 150 trainees
- One Computer Center is run averaging 30 students per batch. Hundreds have been trained
- One Typing Center is run averaging 20 trainees at a time.
- Child Development Project: In cooperation with Compassion India, a Child Development Project is starting in northern India, which will benefit 250-300 children for 25 years. Land was purchased on the outskirts of a town on August 8, 2008 for construction of a school, vocational trainings and child development center through Nava Kanthi. Construction of 12 classrooms, office and guest rooms in process. A 40’ X 20’ hall was already under construction for worship. A 12’ X 20’ hall, kitchen and toilet bath will be the parsonage.
- Project Aashray: Persecution in Orissa State has resulted in loss of life and property among the Christian population. Between 40,000-50,000 persons have been rendered homeless. Project Aashray (Refuge) was started by caring Indian Christian leaders to help the needy with relief and rehabilitation. The organization through which donations are taken is Nava Kanthi Society. We are looking for help in sending supplies to the victims who lost everything. We are taking donations to help them. See http://efionline.org/subsection/news/pressrelease.htm for more information on about the persecuted sisters and brothers there.
